Hold something in your hands

Always be holding something, like papers or a clipboard. This will make you appear more professional and directed, but will also give you something to do with your hands if you find that you're a bit nervous.

Firmly knock 3 times, then take two steps back

Knock, then take a couple steps back to create space and so it doesn't feel like you're attacking the homeowner at the door
